Why I Don’t Reinvent the Wheel [quote]

I tried to express this idea in my post, “I’m a Web Conservative,” but then I read this in “Designing For Easy Interaction” on A List Apart and it expressed my point better in just two sentences:

Success in interaction design is largely a matter of following established patterns, so people can apply what they already know to new contexts. Using known and well-established interactive controls goes a long way in designing for easy interaction.

People have an easier time learning something new when it’s based on something else familiar. That’s the foundation of usability, and it’s something I try to apply to every site I build.
