I am so excited to be heading to Portland for the 2024 Nonprofit Technology Conference. As a long-time attendee, speaker, volunteer, and general NTEN fan, I will be busy and actively engaging in the conference.
I would love to see you again or meet you for the first time, so here’s a list of places I’ll be and some sessions I hope to attend (subject to changing my mind).
Day 1: Wednesday
10:15am: Test your website’s accessibility starting…now!
Location: Portland Ballroom 256
My first conference session is the one I’m presenting! I’m extremely excited and hope there are lots of people in the room for a fast-paced hour learning about do-it-yourself accessibility testing. If you come to the session, you’ll learn how to test the sweet heading structure of this post! 😜
12pm-1pm: WordPress Community Lounge
Location: The Arcade
I’m a co-organizer of the NTEN WordPress Community (our forums are free to join!), and so I’ll be hanging out in the “Community Lounge” over the lunch hour to chat with folks in the community and inviting others to join. The Drupal community will be there too. We’re calling it a “Peace Summit” and asking you to “Give PHPs a Chance”!
2:30pm: Strategic team meetings for teams of one
Location: Portland Ballroom 258
I always love presentations by my friend Janice from Shift and Scaffold who is a great process and project implementation consultants for nonprofits. As a one-person team, I’m very much looking forward to every tip she can throw at me about thinking strategically with myself.
Day 2: Thursday
12pm-1pm: WordPress Community Lounge

1:15pm: Accountability culture for successful technology projects
Location: E143/144
I tend to find NTC sessions on collaboration some of the most thought-provoking and useful for my own practice. This one caught my eye.
2pm: Things we wish our white colleagues knew
Location: Portland Ballroom 258
Since I am white and an active member of the NTEN community, this session is required, as far as I’m concerned. All three folks leading it—the co-organizers of the NTEN BIPOC Nonprofit Professionals community—are excellent, and I am eager to listen closely, and use this gift of an opportunity to think critically about how I interact and support members of the NTEN community.
3pm: WordPress Community Session
Location: C122
Unlike the Community Lounge sessions, this is more of a meetup style. We’ll introduce ourselves and see what people want to talk about. If there’s enough interest, I may lead a “lean coffee” format conversation to make sure we’re talking about high-interest, high-impact topics.
Day 3: Friday
10:15am: Language justice with multilingual websites
Location: E145/146
I’m increasingly getting requests for translations features on websites. While I have experience and some knowledge, I know I have so much more to learn. This promises to be a great session featuring both developers (Shout out to my friends over at DevCollaborative) and staff from the Diversity Health Training Institute.
11:30am – 1pm: White colleagues discussing “Things we wish our white colleagues knew”
Location: Lunch Birds of a Feather table
The co-panelists of the “Things we wish our white colleagues knew” session asked me to host a session for white folks to discuss their learnings and commitments following that session on Thursday. I look forward to joining other white colleagues as we work to support our own learning and hold each other accountable for supporting our BIPOC colleagues.
Phew! That’s a lot of things to be excited about, and there are still session slots where I haven’t decided what I’m doing. (I may visit the quiet room for a bit to recover.)
